In recent years, the conversation around neurodiversity has gained momentum, bringing with it a collection of terms that are often used without a full understanding. Here, we break down some of the most common terms to foster better communication and reduce stigma.

Neurodiversity:This term recognizes the variety of ways in which human brains function. It acknowledges that differences in brain functioning are natural and valuable variations of the human genome.

Neurodivergence:This refers to cognitive processing that deviates from the neurotypical standard, encompassing conditions like Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Neurotypical:A neurotypical person is someone whose neurological development and functioning conform to what is considered standard or typical by societal norms.

Autism Spectrum:The labels "high-functioning" and "low-functioning" autism can be problematic as they oversimplify the complexity of the autistic experience. Instead, it’s more accurate and respectful to discuss the varying levels of support that individuals might need.

Using these terms correctly is crucial. Education and awareness about these concepts improve communication and help dismantle associated prejudices. By embracing neurodiversity, we promote inclusion and understanding in our communities.
